Big football Saturday ahead

North Dakota State may have opened its football season Thursday, but there’s plenty of other college action worth keeping an eye on Saturday.

  • Concordia hosts Willamette in its season opener at 1 p.m. on 740-AM. Willamette has become a perennial contender in Division III. The school was nationally ranked when it defeated the Cobbers 35-21 last season.
  • MSUM hosts Wayne State at 1 p.m. on 1660-AM. The Dragons are coming off a victory against Valley City State last week. This will be their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game this season. Wayne State is coming off a good season last year and sports a respected senior quarterback in Silas Fluellen.
  • Minnesota plays at Syracuse at 11 a.m. on ESPN2. In an effort to further isolate myself from the outside world, I’m going to park myself on the couch and watch the Gophers season opener. I’m interested to see how they look in their never-ending effort to rebuild the program. Also, former Duke point guard Greg Paulus makes his college football debut at quarterback for the Orange.
  • UND plays at Texas Tech at 6 p.m. on 790-AM. The Sioux take a on a team that was a national powerhouse last year in the Red Raiders. Texas Tech is just shy of the Top 25 this year, but it’s just a preseason poll. Obviously, Texas Tech is a heavy favorite, but it’s always interesting to see how a local team does facing a Football Bowl Subdivision team.
