The Wild and so much more on Sports Talk

Ben Karkela and I will be on "Sports Talk" from 1-2 p.m. today on 970-AM WDAY.

Today, we’ll be talking to Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher. We’ll ask him about the reasoning behind his offseason push for Moorhead’s own Matt Cullen, the chances of signing Mike Modano and a bunch of other stuff.

We’ll also talk to UND hockey beat writer Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald about the big – well, he’s only 5-foot-6, but he’s really, really good – recruit that the Sioux landed.

And Karkela and I will break down the Timberwolves’ trade of Al Jefferson, plus we’ll take a look at the top five keys to the Twins’ second half.

To take part in the show, call 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com

Wild GM on Sports Talk on Wednesday

Still working on a guest or two for "Sports Talk" tomorrow (Wednesday) from 1-2 p.m. on 970-AM WDAY.

The one guest I know that Ben Karkela and I will have is Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher. We’ll talk to Fletcher about the Wild’s offseason, including the signing of Moorhead’s Matt Cullen and any interest in former North Stars forward Mike Modano.

Feel free to drop any questions you have for Fletcher in the Comments section of this post.

Check back to this blog tomorrow for more show details.

Radio today: LeBron and Lee

Ben "Kark the Shark" Karkela and I are back on "Sports Talk" from 1-2 p.m. on 970-AM WDAY radio today.

Plenty to talk about on today’s show. We’ll discuss LeBron James’ decision to leave his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers and join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. AP sports writer Jon Krawczynski will give us his thoughts on last night’s "Decision."

We’ll also discuss the reports that Seattle Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee will be traded to the New York Yankees. Multiple news outlets – Newsday, N.Y. Post and ESPN.com – are all reporting that the Evil Empire will ship prospects to the M’s for Lee.

It’s hard to be surprised anytime the Yankees are involved. But it’s being reported that the Yankees won’t get a negotiating window to discuss an extension with Lee, so this is just a two-month rental – for now – with them too. Obviously, one of the Steinbrenners must have been in the ear of GM Brian Cashman to get this done, because moves like this go against what Cashman has been doing with the Yankees – successfully - the last few years.

Hey, if you want to crown the Yankees, then crown them. Actually, you probably should. There’s no way they don’t win the World Series with Lee, CC Sabathia and that lineup. Also, how did the Cleveland Indians not win with Lee and CC? Not a good day to be in Cleveland today.

To take part in the show, call 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com

Want to talk Cliff Lee? Tune in to Sports Talk

We have a special Cliff Lee trade rumors edition of "Sports Talk" from 1-2 p.m. today on 970-AM WDAY radio.

I will be hosting the show today. Joining me in studio – making his radio debut – is The Forum’s resident hockey rube Ben Karkela. He’ll be filling in for Andrew "Don’t call me Andy" Gottenborg, whose two-week trial on the show came to an end last week.

It’s a hockey-free show today, so Ben will have to do the best he can to stay focused.

We want to get both sides of the Lee-to-the-Twins rumors. For the first segment, we’ll be joined by Rochester Red Wings beat reporter Jim Mandelaro of the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle. Mandelaro can fill us in on how catching prospect Wilson Ramos is handling all of the trade rumors right now. We might ask him about a few other players too: Jacque Jones, Jose Morales, Brendan Harris, Pat Neshek, Glen Perkins, etc.

In the second segment, for a Seattle point of view, we’ll have Dave Cameron joining us. Cameron writes for the famed USSMariner.com and for FanGraphs.com, plus he contributes to the Wall Street Journal. Cameron can tell us how well Lee has performed for the Mariners and let us know what the M’s want in a trade. You can read his thoughts on the latest Lee rumors here.

Finally, we’ll also discuss the latest news from the NBA free agency circus. LeBron James is getting a one hour special on ESPN. I hate the idea of it, but I’m sure I’ll watch it anyway. I’m part of the problem, not the solution. Also, it’s being reported that Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are going to Miami.

To take part in the show, call us at 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com. And if you have any questions for either guest, post them in the Comments section too and I’ll try to get to them today.

On the radio today

I’m making my weekly appearance on "Sports Talk" today from 1-2 p.m. on WDAY 970-AM.

Joining me in studio is Forum colleague Andrew Gottenborg.

Today on the show, we’ll talk to Associated Press sports writer Jon Krawczynski about all things Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Twins. The NBA opens free agency tomorrow. Are the Wolves equipped to make any splash whatsoever? They have the money, but seemingly every team has the money.

We’ll also talk to Fargo Force goalie Zane Gothberg, who was drafted by the NHL’s Boston Bruins on Saturday. We’ll ask him about that and about the upcoming Force camp in a couple of weeks.

And Gottenborg and I will debate a potential Stephen Strasburg All-Star bid, which got some activity on my previous post. I have to admit that Steve in the Comments section made a strong argument against Strasburg being on the team, and I might be wavering. I knew it was the year of the pitcher, but wow. There are a lot of guys with sub-3.00 ERAs in the NL, aren’t there?

To take part in the show, give us a call at (701) 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com.

On the radio today

We’ve got a big show slated for "Sports Talk" today from 1-2 p.m. on WDAY 970-AM.

Joining me in studio – making his radio debut – is my Forum colleague Andrew Gottenborg. He’ll be filling in for the departed Kerry Collins for the next couple of weeks. Gottenborg is just like Collins, except there’s less risk of him cursing on the air. I’m sure he’ll be a big hit.

Today, we’ll be talking to Fargo auto racer Donny Schatz about tonight’s Tony Stewart Night at Red River Valley Speedway and about his season on the World of Outlaws circuit.

Then, we’ll discuss the USA’s thrilling World Cup victory this morning in the final minutes to push the U.S. into the knockout round. If you didn’t care about the World Cup, will you start to care now?

And last but not least, we have UND athletic director Brian Faison. He’ll talk about The Summit League’s decision to evaluate his university and we’ll get his reaction to the conference choosing to explore adding football.

To take part in the show, call 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com

On the radio today

I return to my usual Wednesday slot on "Sports Talk" today from 1-2 p.m. on 970-AM WDAY radio.

Today, Kerry Collins and I will be talking NBA Finals, which is now headed to a winner-take-all Game 7 on Thursday night.

We’ll also discuss potential midseason acquisitions for the Minnesota Twins. MLBtraderumors.com has a Minnesota Twins wish list on its website. Are any of these players realistic possibilities?

And we’ll talk World Cup. No. 2-ranked Spain fell victim to an upset bid by Switzerland.

To take part in the show, call 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com.

On the radio today

I’m filling in on "Sports Talk" from 1-2 p.m. today on 970-AM WDAY radio.

Today, Tom Mix (aka the self-proclaimed "Monday Afternoon Tycoon") and I will be talking about a busy Sunday in the sports world yesterday. We’ll discuss some Major League Baseball, the NBA playoffs, the Stanley Cup Finals and we’ll have our weekly chat with UND hockey beat reporter Brad Schlossman from the Grand Forks Herald.

We’re taking your calls at 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com

Twins GM Bill Smith on Sports Talk today

I am on "Sports Talk" from 1-2 p.m. today (usually doesn’t start until about 1:10 though) on 970-AM WDAY radio.

Joining Kerry Collins and I will be Minnesota Twins general manager Bill Smith. We’ll talk to him about all things Twins – Joe Mauer, Target Field, payroll, trade deadline, closer situation, etc.

I’m not sure yet what else we will talk about on the show just yet. Check back for updates.

We’ll also discuss Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella‘s decision to bench his big-name players yesterday in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Has the "Curse of the Billy Goat" gotten to Piniella, too? And we’ll look at the standings and decide, after two months, what teams are for real and what teams are not. Look out, San Diego Padres!

Last segment, we’ll discuss tonight’s Stanley Cup Finals matchup. Is the series already over? One of us thinks so.

If you want to take part in the show, give us a call at 293-9000 or (800) 279-9329 or e-mail talk@wday.com.

Feel free to leave any comments in the Comments section too, questions for Smith or whatever. I’ll ask him as much as I can in the time we have with him.

On the radio today

I make my weekly appearance on "Sports Talk" today from 1-2 p.m. on 970-AM WDAY radio.

Today, Kerry Collins and I will be talking to NHL free agent Matt Cullen, who finished last season with the Ottawa Senators. The Moorhead High School grad will discuss the upcoming Stanley Cup Finals and his offseason.

We’re also going to talk about tonight’s opener at Red River Valley Speedway, and we’ll discuss New York City/New Jersey getting the Super Bowl in 2014. Is a cold weather Super Bowl a good idea?
